Donald Trump imposes 25% tariff on Indian goods over Russian oil purchases. Analysts warn it may hurt US consumers and raise inflation.

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order slapping an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods in retaliation for New Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil.

This move doubles the existing tariffs, raising India's total levy to 50%, and marks Trump's latest tactic to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin into ending the war in Ukraine.

Analysts warn that this step could backfire, hurting US businesses, increasing prices for American consumers, and accelerating inflation. “This could become a serious self-inflicted wound,” warned Clayton Seigle of CSIS.

India Joins List of Heavily Tariffed Countries

India is now among the top countries facing a 50% reciprocal tariff, along with Brazil. Other nations, including Iraq (35%) and Algeria (30%), are seeing significant hikes as well, according to a newly released tariff chart.

While these tariffs aim to reduce Russia's oil revenue, the domestic economic cost may outweigh geopolitical gains.
