OpenAI CEO Sam Altman unveils GPT-5, highlighting major leaps in AI and India’s rapid adoption, positioning it as the company’s second-largest market after the US.

OpenAI has introduced GPT-5, its most advanced AI model to date, offering significant improvements in accuracy, speed, reasoning, and mathematical capabilities. During the launch, CEO Sam Altman emphasized India’s status as OpenAI’s second-largest market after the US, noting its remarkable growth and innovation in AI adoption.

Altman praised the pace at which Indian individuals and businesses are integrating AI into their workflows, stating that India could soon surpass the US as OpenAI’s largest market globally. He confirmed that the company is partnering with local organizations to enhance AI access and affordability, with plans to visit India in September.

Free Access and Model Variants

GPT-5 will be available in multiple versions — gpt-5, gpt-5-mini, and gpt-5-nano — to allow developers to balance cost, performance, and speed. For the first time, the flagship model will also be part of the free tier, enabling broader access to advanced AI capabilities.

Technical Leap Toward AGI

According to Altman, GPT-5 represents a major step forward from GPT-4 and moves closer to Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). In the API, GPT-5 will serve as the reasoning model powering ChatGPT’s best results, alongside a non-reasoning variant called gpt-5-chat-latest.

Availability and Subscription Plans

ChatGPT Team users can access GPT-5 immediately, with Enterprise and Education users joining next week. Pro subscribers ($200/month) will enjoy unlimited GPT-5 access and an enhanced Pro version with extended reasoning, while Plus subscribers ($20/month) get higher usage limits than free users.
